For Newtown

For Newtown Last Friday afternoon, I like many of you learned of the awful tragedy that had occured that morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. I got home that night, ready to study for the final that I just took this morning. But somehow, studying about epitaxial inorganic growth didnt seem as important as calling Ryan, my 10-year-old brother, up on the phone that night. Im about to watch a movie, he hastily answered, clearly oblivious to the days events, continuing with his trademark Whatchoowant? Oh, you know, just wanted to say hi. I miss you. Im bored. Love ya, sis! Love you, Ry. The next morning, I rolled my cello to Lobby 7, the area under the dome that serves as the unofficial entrance to MITs Infinite Cooridor. I met up with a handful of other MIT Symphony Orchestra friends, along with some musicians from the Brookline Symphony Orchestra, who had all assembled thanks to the idea of Adam Boyles, our director. Quoting Leonard Bernstein, Adam began the impromptu and somewhat makeshift memorial concert for the victims of the shooting by saying,  â€œThis will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” Tourists, passersby, students undoubtedly heading to the library to cram for finals people who in any other circumstance would be hurrying on their way all stopped to pay tribute to a community located a couple hours away. Afterward, as I packed up my instrument, I saw a professor wiping away tears as she zipped up her toddlers coat. Thank you for doing this, she softly spoke before zipping up her own. I managed to sputter in reply, Of course, before realizing that I had my own tears to wipe away. Ive been so moved by the emotions Ive seen in friends and mentors here in response to the tragedy, reflective of the compassion that connects friends and strangers alike. No amount of music or prayers or consolations, written or spoken, will ever be enough to even begin to bring peace to the families and all those affected by Fridays events. I cannot start to imagine what they are experiencing now, and what they will continue to endure. My heart breaks for each and every one of them. But we offer these things up for them the only things we could possibly give to the people of Newtown because we are called to do so as brothers and sisters of this world and I hope that in some way, however miniscule, it will contribute to their healing. A Mister Rogers quote has been circulating the internet these past couple days that I find particularly pertinent “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers -â€" so many caring people in this world.” I am in awe of the many  unfathomably brave  people  whose selflessness towards protecting others will never be forgotten, along with the innocent and beautiful  people who passed away. I am in awe of the grace, poise, and sense of community that Newtown as shown our country in light of inexplicable heartbreak.  A profoundly awful tragedy merited a profoundly poignant response, a testament to the resilence of the human spirit and the goodness of many. I am in awe of the kindness of people like Adam, who, instinctively reached out to console others to their best capacity, and I am in awe of the many strangers who I saw that morning standing in solidarity with our neighbors. Being reminded of this compassion made me infinitely grateful to encounter such people in my life, and to share another day with the people I love. Tell these people who Im sure are also in your lives that you love them. Every day is a gift, and every person is a gift. These are the things I will remember. Fridays events and the ensuing media chaos has initiated some conversations that our society desparately needs to be having. I am hopeful that this will be the start of our countrys movement toward creating a more understanding, peaceful, and fraternal one. But like Adam told me after I thanked him for organizing the memorial concert, Im so sorry it had to be under these circumstances. Adam closed our concert with this excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr.s Eulogy for the Maryred Children, which was delivered during the funeral services of three girls killed in the bombing of a Birmingham, AL church in 1963. Newtown, for what its worth, there is a community here mourning with you and for you. Now I say to you in conclusion, life is hard, at times as hard as crucible steel. It has its bleak and difficult moments. Like the everâ€"flowing waters of the river, life has its moments of drought and its moments of flood. Like the everâ€"changing cycle of the seasons, life has the soothing warmth of its summers and the piercing chill of its winters. And if one will hold on, he will discover that God walks with him, and that God is able to lift you from the fatigue of despair to the buoyancy of hope, and transform dark and desolate valleys into sunlit paths of inner peace. And so today, you do not walk alone. You gave to this world wonderful children. They didn’t live long lives, but they lived meaningful lives. Their lives were distressingly small in quantity, but glowingly large in quality. And no greater tribute can be paid to you as parents, and no greater epitaph can come to them as children, than where they died and what they were doing when they died And today, as I stand over the remains of these beautiful, darling girls, I paraphrase the words of Shakespeare: Good night, sweet princesses. Good night, those who symbolize a new day. And may the flight of angels take thee to thy eternal rest. God bless you.

Jacks says that Ralph stayed behind on the mountaintop while he and Roger went ahead (139). This showed cowardice and Jack thinks that he should become the leader; the boys once again vote for Ralph and Jack leaves the group angrily. Gender Stereotyping Of Children s Advertisements

Gender Stereotyping is generalizing attributes or characteristics on roles for boys and girls, especially through children’s advertisements. In America the difference between boys and girls advertisements is quite noticeable and something that should be recognized as a problem. Companies create ads and labels that have their products categorized by gender and shades of colors. This has caused a division in the behavior of girls and boys, and the expectations society expects from each gender. By companies following gender norms, they don’t even recognize those who identify with non-binary genders. This stereotyping digs a bigger whole against gender equality and acceptance, but companies can make a difference in their behavior. A difference that will allow children to see toys, as just toys, and people as equals. No labels on who can play with what or express themselves. Companies should strive to have their commercials and labels to include both genders in the ad, like the country Sweden who has started to stray away from gender norms in their ads. The solution to gender stereotyping in children’s advertisements is to educate the companies on the type of impact they are having on a child’s self-expression and identity, through studies and examination of past commercials, ads, labels, and toys. GUIDELINES FOR ASSESSMENT TASK 2 When explaining the electoral process for P3, learners only need to include one election process and ensure that they clearly identify to which level of government it relates. The explanation should be detailed in its content and will be expected to identify the complete process from the initial application to stand for election to the declaration of the vote, including the voting system that is used. Evidence for M2 must include a comparison of the election process for the elected representatives for at least two levels of government. Of Mice and Men

Thesis Statement: the cycle of oppression and insecurity seen in society is in fact reflected in the novel itself where the author attempts to create a microcosm of the current state of society by having the characters portray the various types of personalities people encounter on a daily basis.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More How the Novel Relates to the Greater Theme of Human Society In the novel, â€Å"Of Mice and Men†, Steinbeck relays an unfortunate facet of human nature, namely, the fact that humans have a predatory nature of existence which is epitomized by the saying â€Å"it’s a dog eat dog world† (Cardullo, 19 – 29). This is exemplified by the actions of nearly all the characters wherein at one point or another in the story, despite displaying a sense of loneliness or a form of isolation with each character seeking some form of companionship, they still choose to exploit or demean those who they believe are weaker than they are (Cardullo, 19 – 29). For example, the African American, Crooks, demeans Lennie for his dependence on George yet he himself is lonely and wishes to have the same type of companion. Such apparent derision is followed by a scene involving Crooks and the wife of Curley who demeans Crooks on the basis of his race and various social prejudices yet she herself admits later on in the story that she feels lonely and isolated due to neglect on the part of Curley and her desire to be a movie star. What must be understood is that throughout the novel a certain cycle can be seen wherein each character apparently demeans and derides the other with each form of derision going from character to character until it completes a full circle and arrives back at the character that started this apparent cycle of continued derision (Jain and Bloom, 45 – 46). From this it can be seen that Ste inbeck is apparently trying to impart to readers the fact that the only way humans can cope with their own feelings of weakness and insecurity is to find it in others and deride them for it (Jain and Bloom, 45 – 46). In fact it can be stated that feelings of insecurity various characters have throughout the novel is in effect the result of the cycle of derision wherein each character continues to foster the feeling of weakness and insecurity in the other. In a sense this cycle of derision can thus be interpreted as a form of oppression wherein Steinbeck is trying to relay the message that oppression itself does not originate only from the hands of the strong but from the weak as well and that it is this very cycle that people apparently seem to draw a certain degree of strength (Jain and Bloom, 45 – 46).Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Such a cycle can actually be seen in a regular high school setting wherein popular kids demean geeks, nerds and the â€Å"less popular† but they themselves are insecure due to the tenuous nature of popularity in that they deride and shame others in order to remain popular and maintain their status. This is also seen in various parts of the novel wherein in order to maintain the sense of identity the characters have forged for themselves they oppress other characters in order to maintain the sense of who they are yet such a method of creating an identity is in itself based on nothing more than a method of covering up their own inherent weaknesses. Such a case can be seen in various social examples wherein women deride and demean other women due to their appearance yet they themselves are inherently insecure. Men oppress other men on the basis of the other’s sexuality yet they themselves are insecure about their own sexuality. Finally, even children demean other children in the form of bullying yet in most cases such actions are the result of their own troubled households (Sardar and Saunders, 48). Based on this it can be seen that the cycle of oppression and insecurity seen in society is in fact reflected in the novel itself where the author attempts to create a microcosm of the current state of society by having the characters portray the various types of personalities people encounter on a daily basis. Concept of Hopes and Dreams Another facet of the novel and how it relates to human society is the concept of hopes and dreams and how it helps people to survive despite never becoming real. This is actually a continuing theme in the novel wherein each character displays a particular type of hope or dream that never truly materializes yet is one of the driving forces behind their behavior. For example the concept of George and Lennie’s farm is actually symbolic of the idyllic life that the characters in novel are after(Person Jr. et al., 71- 72). This is evidenced b y the fact that so many of the main characters in novel are entranced by the idea of owning a farm that they even request to be part of the venture. It must be noted that the farm itself symbolizes freedom for the various men within the ranch. For Candy it symbolizes freedom from the fear of being cast out of the ranch due to his old age while for Crooks the farm is symbolic of his freedom from the prejudices of the world where the color of ones skin dictates the amount of respect and opportunities one receives.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Thus the concept of the farm is one closely related to the shared dream of freedom by all the men which enables them to continue to persevere despite events and occurrences heaping more problems onto their lives (Person Jr. et al., 71- 72). This is evidenced by the scene involving George wherein he felt relaxed enough to go with the other ranch hands to the town despite Lenny getting into an earlier fight with Curley. An examination of the character of George in the novel reveals that early on he came to the realization that the world itself, or perhaps society, is designed to prey on the weak. This rationalization comes after his introspection regarding his previous actions towards Lennie wherein he actually abused Lennie in order to amuse himself. It must be noted that in similar novels where the character comes to realize that the world around him is a dystopia such characters often wind up sinking into a hopeless depression yet in the case of George such a situation does not come about. In fact it can be seen as the story progresses that despite the continuing problems he encounters he still continues to behave in the same manner and does not sink into a depressing state. The reason behind this can be connected to his dream of freedom, of being able to leave work when he wants to, watch a baseball game at his leisure and be in a place where he and Lennie can live in safety and comfort (Tecott, 646). It is this particular dream that becomes the driving force behind the actions of George despite the problems he has to endure from Curly or Curly’s wife. It must be noted that the concept of hopes and dreams helping a person survive is actually based off the notion that people created the concept of God in order to find a form of sanctuary. Various scholars have posited the idea that God is nothing more than a concept created by people in order to fulfill the specific purpose of helping man comfort himself. This is done by having all the negative problems that occur in his life be justified by the fact that there is a entity greater than him who will give him his just rewards when he dies. In fact the justification of the afterlife is firmly embedded in the concept of God wherein fear of the unknown that comes after death is tempered by the belief that there is a God and th at when we die there will be an afterlife. As such it can be seen that this concept was developed in order to help comfort people, to give them solace and to help them focus on something else other than the situation they are in. This particular method of thinking is similar to the concept of hopes and dreams helping people survive since it is hopes and dreams that help to distract people from the hopelessness of their situation. It gives them the ability to see what could potentially be in front of them should they continue on the path they striving on, past the difficulty they are currently experiencing. In no situation is this more exemplified than that of Candy in the novel.Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Due to his increasing age and the fact that he is missing a hand Candy eventually comes to see the farm described by Lennie as freedom from a world where his deteriorating age and handicap serves as a constant reminder of the potential for him to be kicked off of the ranch by Casey (Doren and Bloom, 26 – 27). In fact it can even be seen that at times Candy seems even desperate for the concept of the farm to actually succeed which is an indication of how strong the influence the dream has had on his own life. It can be said that the novel itself is reminder of how dreams can have such power over a person’s life and actions that they even determine how they behave (Andrews, 131 – 134). This particular concept can actually be seen and is even directly alluded to in the novel by Curly’s wife. Towards the latter part of the novel she admits that she feels incredibly dissatisfied with her life and dreams to become a movie star and leave the confines of the ranc h (Doren and Bloom, 26 – 27). It is seen that her demeaning attitude towards the other characters in the novel is actually a result of her frustrations at the course of her own life yet she still clings to the dream of being a movie star despite there having absolutely no chance of it occurring in the future (Doren and Bloom, 26 – 27). For her it is a coping mechanism, designed to conceal and help her cope with the frustration of the utter hopelessness of her situation (Watt and Bloom, 37 – 38). It must be noted that a continuing theme in the novel is the loneliness and isolation each character faces however Steinbeck creates a coping mechanism for each character by having each of them have a particular dream that they want to obtain (Watt and Bloom, 37 – 38). In fact it is strongly alluded to in the novel that it is hopes and dreams that continue to give people the will to live and survive and that once it is taken away people tend to die due to the lack of a goal, even though it is unattainable. Such an assumption is proven by the symbolic death of Lennie. In various scenes throughout the novel it is strongly alluded to that Lennie will eventually meet a rather grisly end such as the scene involving Candy’s dog and his fight with Curly. It is when these factors combine and culminate that the concept of the dream vanishes since it no longer becomes even marginally possible to achieve resulting in the death of Lennie. Lennie Being the Personification of a Dream As mentioned earlier the novel itself can be interpreted as a microcosm of human nature and society, reflecting the nature of humanity and how society reacts to human nature. Based on this it can be said that the various characters within can even be interpreted as being nothing more than symbolic representations of aspects of humanity and society. The character of Lennie can thus be interpreted as being the personification of the human dream, his innocence and purity are similar to that of the dreams of many individuals which when examined lack the harsh realities of the real world and like a dream Lennie does not realize the capacity of his own strength. This particular interpretation of the character of Lennie can actually be seen in the way how Candy, Crooks and George all seem to believe in and are snared by the vision of the farm created by Lennie and the freedom it entails for all of them. Lennie is the personification of the innocent hopes and dreams people tend to have in order to survive yet just like these very dreams when faced with the stark harshness of reality they tend to die. His death is symbolic of the death of dreams when faced with reality, in that the scenes involving his habit of stroking soft things culminating in the death of the Curly’s wife could in fact be interpreted as the harshness of reality slowly creeping up on Lennie with the subsequent deaths of the animals and Curly’s wife being symbolic of the w ay in which reality slowly eats away at a dream till nothing is left at all. Be sure to read our final guide after you’ve completed reading this one. With that said, here is the sample: Sample Exploratory Essay: The Culture of Afghanistan in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini The Kite Runner is an interesting book and is very entertaining to read. However, several identities such as Janette Edwards, have exposed Hosseini and critiqued the book as inauthentic and suspicious. Since Edwards has conducted several interviews with Afghan-Americans, he thinks that the parallels between the author and character position Hosseini as an outsider to Afghanistan. According to the book, the culture of the Afghans is not quite how it is in real life. Khaled Hosseini is actually the son of a diplomat, who has spent most of his life outside Afghanistan, which, in all likelihood, could mean that he doesn’t know much about his culture, religion or the Afghan society, for that matter. Since most criticisms on the Kite Runner claim that the characters and situations written in the book were reckless and devising; it clearly exposes the fact that Hosseini doesn’t really know the fabric of the Afghan society. Furthermore, the argument holds itself strong as Khaled Hosseini got separated from Afghanistan in his childhood. If you’ve read â€Å"The Reluctant Fundamentalist†, you know how beautifully the author views American society and merges his lead character with the society itself. The Kite Runner, however, does the opposite. There are scarce interactions with non-Afghan Americans and the author highlights only the Afghani subculture – which, by many author criticisms, shows no consciousness. Even though Amir’s identification as an American seems appropriable as he achieves his American dream to become a novelist, unfortunately, there is no context in the book that exposes any kind of interaction with American society. On the other hand, the story that spans over the book is a graphic with violent accounts including rape, brutal beatings and public executions. Although, the story is fictional, the author has described it in a life-like scene, which to most of people, is indigestible and may claim that it contradicts the true culture in Afghanistan. The Kite Runner portrays possible realities that do exist all around the world – it’s a story of brotherhood, sacrifice, guilt, betrayal and pretty much everything that is found in human societies. However, the author includes a few violent and horrible events in the book that not only disgust the reader, but to some extent, traumatize people, so much so that they tend to agree with the author’s point of view on Afghani culture. If Hosseini had laid out his fictional story without creating such disturbing events in the book and including events that were leading characters such as Amir to interact with American society, the book would have made for a marvelous and inspiring story. However, this isn’t the case. It’s still a good read, however it can traumatize people who’ve never had the pleasure to know or experience â€Å"real† Afghani culture – it’s certainly not as bad as the book depicts it. Now that you’ve read our second guide, it’s time to read our final manual that explains how an exploratory essay is written. It is highly recommended that you read our informative guide for an exploratory essay thoroughly, as it will clear away any confusion you may have and assist you in writing a brilliant exploratory essay on The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Stoichiometry Definition in Chemistry

Stoichiometry Definition in Chemistry Stoichiometry is one of the most important subjects in general chemistry. It is typically introduced after discussing parts of the atom and unit conversions. While its not difficult, many students get put off by the complicated-sounding word. For this reason, it may be introduced as Mass Relations. StoichiometryDefinition Stoichiometry is the study of the quantitative relationships or ratios between two or more substances undergoing a physical change or chemical change (chemical reaction). The word derives from the  Greek words:  stoicheion  (meaning element) and  metron  (meaning to measure). Most often, stoichiometry calculations deal with the mass or volumes of products and reactants. Pronunciation Pronounce stoichiometry as  stoy-kee-ah-met-tree or abbreviate it as stoyk. What Is Stoichiometry? Jeremias Benjaim Richter defined stoichiometry in 1792 as the science of measuring quantities or mass ratios of chemical elements. You might be given a chemical equation and the mass of one reactant or product and asked to determine the quantity of another reactant or product in the equation. Or, you might be given the quantities of reactants and products and asked to write the balanced equation that fits the math. Important Concepts in Stoichiometry You must master the following chemistry concepts to solve stoichiometry problems: Balancing equationsConverting between grams and molesCalculating molar massCalculating mole ratios Remember, stoichiometry is the study of mass relations. To master it, you need to be comfortable with unit conversions and balancing equations. From there, the focus is on mole relationships between reactants and products in a chemical reaction. Mass-Mass Stoichiometry Problem One of the most common types of chemistry problems youll use stoichiometry to solve is the mass-mass problem. Here are the steps to solve a mass-mass problem: Correctly identify the problem as a mass-mass problem. Usually youre given a chemical equation, like:A 2B → CMost often, the question is a word problem, such as:Assume 10.0 grams of A reacts completely with B. How many grams of C will be produced?Balance the chemical equation. Make certain you have the same number of each type of atom on both the reactants and products side of the arrow in the equation. In other words, apply the Law of Conservation of Mass.Convert any mass values in the problem into moles. Use the molar mass to do this.Use molar proportion to determine unknown quantities of moles. Do this by setting two molar ratios equal to each other, with the unknown as the only value to solve.Convert the mole value you just found into mass, using the molar mass of that substance. Excess Reactant, Limiting Reactant, and Theoretical Yield Because atoms, molecules, and ions react with each other according to molar ratios, youll also encounter stoichiometry problems that ask you to identify the limiting reactant or any reactant that is present in excess. Once you know how many moles of each reactant you have, you compare this ratio to the ratio required to complete the reaction. The limiting reactant would be used up before the other reactant, while the excess reactant would be the one leftover after the reaction proceeded. Since the limiting reactant defines exactly how much of each reactant actually participates in a reaction, stoichiometry is used to determine theoretical yield. Argumentation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Argumentation - Research Paper Example casualties while maximizing destruction and death abroad. That Obama was elected through the use of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Jesus Christ in his moral rhetoric makes the use of violent force in government policy problematic. For example, if we are to ask whether these teachers accept the use of deadly force and violence as a means to solve political problems or social issues, the answer would be an unequivocal no – not in any instance. It can be further argued that by invoking MLK, Gandhi, his Christian faith, and his unique family history, the President communicated a point of view to the electorate that was expressive of his moral sense of identity. If Obama as President continues to pursue what the Washington Times describes as â€Å"neoconservative policies† through military action abroad, he is indeed going against the moral tone that he communicated to his base in seeking election and should be held accountable in the upcoming 2012 election for it. The Washington Times (2011) writes in the editorial: â€Å"Mr. ... For now anyway. Mr. Obama’s motive - trying to dislodge an authoritarian regime in the name of the Libyan people - are solidly within the neoconservative framework.† (Washington Times, 2011) The article is limited in space but could have clearly noted that Obama has pursued the â€Å"Just War† doctrine through his policy of escalation in Afghanistan and Pakistan while drawing down in Iraq, and Libya is the latest example of that policy. President Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech can be seen as one of the main locations where he develops the â€Å"Just War† doctrine and with it his reasons why he cannot or will not implement a purely pacifist foreign policy as advocated by Gandhi and MLK particularly. (NYT, 2009) What the Washington Times suggests is that at heart Obama is no different that Nixon or Eisenhower, who like the majority of Americans would â€Å"believe in† Christianity and not see it as inconsistent with war. Yet, t he Washington Times is not writing the editorial to advocate the position of MLK and Gandhi in politics, they are writing to exult with glee as Obama again sells these principles out and the â€Å"moral Left† writhes in agony. The implication of this tone is happier still in that the writers expect that Obama will likely lose the election, having sold out his moral base continually throughout his administration. Following the Washington Times arguments, it is easy to view the Obama administration’s economic policies as no real change from the neo-conservative Bush administration. President Obama continued the Wall St.â€Å"bailout† policies enacted by the Bush administration as well as expanding them. President Obama’s majority-led Congress extended the Bush tax cuts in another example of neo-conservative policy.

Swimming pool policy evaluation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Swimming pool policy evaluation - Essay Example The regulation states that I am sure that the other users of the facility will agree with me when I say that shutting down the facilities for 15 minutes 4 times a day takes away from the enjoyment that we expect to get when we come to the pool. In fact, the facilities are closed up to 6 times a day, depending upon the number of babies and children present at the pool on that day. This is not to say that we do not appreciate the concern of management towards the health safety of the pool users. It is after all, a well known fact that water borne illnesses are most often transferred through ingested pool water. With the prevalence of cryptosporidosis, the water borne diarrhea in most swimming water facilities, one can never be too cautious. Our community would of course, hate to see the facility shut down together with the other 12.1% of pools that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) shut down for health safety violations ( Spivey, 2). Closing the pool 4 times a day for cleaning is obviously part of the zeal and protectiveness that the pool administrators feel for the bathers. However, closing the pool 4 times a day to add chemicals and disinfectants to the water may not be the proper way to insure the cleanliness of the general pools. It may instead, be removing from the enjoyment of the swimmers and their family members. Even the Hyperchlorinization of the pool once a week does not improve the water enjoyment of the members. Instead, it poses a different kind of water borne health threat due to the Chloramine levels in the pool which cause mild to severe eye and respiratory inflammation among those exposed to it. As concerned members of this facility, we would like to suggest that certain changes be undertaken be in the cleaning policy in order to add instead of hinder the water enjoyment of the bathers. We would like

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: The First Green Politician Essay

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt once stated, â€Å"A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.† As the thirty-second President of the United States, during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war, Roosevelt recognized and addressed the need for conserving and protecting the nation’s natural resources. Roosevelt put forth the necessary effort to not only raise awareness, but also create a change in the literal ‘land’ of the free. When Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) became U.S. President in 1933, he sought out the advice of modern-thinking experts in many fields in an effort to improve the then current environmental state of his country. It was not only Roosevelt who greatly expected results from these efforts, but his fellow citizens as well. With his long-term passion for nature and interest in the science of forestry and resource management, Franklin D. Roosevelt was particularly shocked by the waste of American natural resources during a time in which his country had such great need. In his inaugural address, he stated his belief on this subject before his fellow citizens, "Nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have multiplied it. Plenty is at our doorstep, but a generous use of it languishes in the very sight of the supply." This man knew of the rich treasures that lie within the loams and rolling hills of our country. He understood the benefits of its wealth, if employed resourcefully. His initia tives sought to intelligently utilize these resources while creating jobs for out-of-work Americans. Roosevelt’s environmental policies incorporated the emerging field of ecology with federal policies to manage watersheds, maintain forests, teach agriculture, and hold fast the flying soils of the southern plains. The main force behind this federal action was derived from the national surge in unemployment. The economic collapse of 1929 left millions of American citizens incapable of making a living. These unfortunate financial setbacks were most evident in the American southern plains region. Terrible drought combined with economic difficulty made it practically impossible for many farms in the rural mid-western United States to produce. Residents of Oklahoma fled westward to California, creating resettlement problems on top of already ... ...ull of national and global changes in the 1930s, a man put forth the effort to preserve the ‘the fruited plains’ of his country. If not for the measures taken by him, the national and rural appreciation for our natural resources might have come much later. In the midst of World War II, an economic recession, and a paralytic illness of polio, this man noticed and fully understood the importance of a harmonious balance between the nation’s people and its soils. Statistics Data Driven Decision Making

It is known that there are two data types that are utilized to evaluate and draw meaningful conclusions through statistics, population and sample data. These two data types are utilized to formulate end conclusions of data that is to be collected and data that is to be reviewed. The description of population data can best be explained, as the complete collection of all data that is to be queried/collected and reviewed. Sample data, a subset of population data, is the partial collection and review of all data that is to be queried. The relationship of these two data types is simple; sample data is represented as a reflection of the population data and shares a common goal in this comparison through statistics. This can also either be represented as a part or as a whole of all data being evaluated. However we tend to utilize sample data more often than population data primarily as a result that sample data is utilized to formulate a coherent approach to drawing meaningful conclusions ab out the population. We utilize this through random sampling of population data to gather and make an assumption based on the population. This can kind of draw the conclusion that sample data and population data go hand in hand. As an example if we utilize â€Å"Culture Matters: A Survey Study of Social Q&A Behavior† an article which conducted, in 2009, a social survey of questions and answers based on cultural behaviors, we can come to find relatable data that can be identified through the understanding of sample and population data.An overview of this article notes that sample data was collected from four countries and turned overs responses from 933 people, of the population, who held similar job roles and were employed by a singular organization. This was completed to ascertain an understanding of what motivated an individual’s response to ask and answer questions while accessing a social network site.In this response the United States and the United Kingdom provided data which showed that western countries tend to associate themselves more with an individualistic approach and showed a lower context pattern, while China and India, Asian Cultures, tend to better associate themselves more with a high context pattern, and holistic collectivism. This data shows that the method of random sampling was utilized to ascertain a meaningful understanding of the sample data to formulate an assumption about the population of ones culture within these ountries and the role behind this decision making. As a result we can see that sample data which resulted in 38% UK workers, 41% US, 45% CN, and 50% IN was collected from the resulting population of a 100% of workers from all ethnicity working under a singular work group. This leaves to question the background ethnicity of those individual who did not participate in this survey. In result these statistics were utilized to draw a meaningful conclusion about this data both as a whole and as a sample.
